June 2010
New Picos
It has been a very busy couple of months at CYE. Power House (Chris Mcleish) has worked hard to sell and replace our fleet of Pico’s in time, for when the season really kicked off and they finally arrived in late April. It was well worth the wait as Power recons they are even better designed than last years. It’s been great to take them out in the fantastic weather we have been having and the kids were begging to take turns in them during Get Sailing last week in half term. |

Cobstock
Over the weekend of the 5th June, Cobnor held their annual Festival, Cobstock, which CYE had been invited to participate in by Diane Beale. What Cobstock is, is a mini 'Music Festival' fundraising for Cobnor Activity Centre, Chidham Church and this year, for CYE. It involves mainly the locals of Chidham and surrounding villages and is a jolly good day out. On the Saturday we had fantastic weather for all the land activities that were going on including the live music been performed on the main stage and CYE had our own corner where Denise and Sarah Bennetts sold cakes and cream teas throughout the afternoon. On the water, the staff team were busy giving joy rides in our newly 'cye.org.uk' decorated Wayfarers, to the festival goers. All the money raised from the day is to go towards the New Ship! |

Staff News
19 year old Michael Shorey has temporarily joined the staff team for 8 weeks. He is a newly qualified Dinghy Instructor and is preparing himself before he joins the team at Abernethy, a Christian outdoor activity centre in Scotland. He has got stuck in and has been newly named the Pied Piper as the children absolutely love him. CYE have been blessed to have Michael as it has softened the blow of 'Goose' a.k.a Tim Moss sadly leaving us. Congratulations and celebration though to Tim, as he was married on the 31st of May to the lovely Shelley. It was a beautiful wedding in St Mary’s Church, Chidham and Tim did us proud. CYE wishes the happy couple all the best in the future, he will be missed as we all know just how Unique Tim is. |

May 2010
| It has been a race against time for poor old Kevin and his C.O.G's, trying to finish the Girls and Boys toilets before the season kicks in. The beautiful floor tiles have been completed and the boys showers are up and running, it's just a lack of toilets which have been a bit awkward. Here is a sneak preview of the boy's toilet newly named 'Boys Cloakroom' by Denise. |
|
 |
We have already been busy entertaining our good friends from Fellowship Afloat and St George's House, kicking off our season to a great start. They came for three fun days of some light sail training and of course the all important football tournament. It was a very competitive and close finish but CYE unfortunately came third. Better luck next year! But we did win in the Sailing!!!
You can spot Will and Hannah working hard towards their Pre Assessment in preparation for their Dinghy Instructors, which is coming up very soon and some of SGH's staff looking very 'chilled' as they do their level 2 Power Boat.
We would like to congratulate Goose (Tim Moss) for bracing the cold and achieving his Senior Instructors this weekend.
Well done Goose, well deserved!

February 2010 - The Big Clean
The team spent a WHOLE week cleaning the entire centre, from top to bottom, not a single cob web could hide from Denise. Whilst that was going one, Kevin was ripping up the Boys and Girls toilets getting them ready to be completely re-done for the new season.
The Staff were happy, it meant they didn’t have to clean them!
Good Bye nasty Blue flooring, Hello lovely brand new floor tiling. Hurrah! |

February 2010
February has been a month of paddle sports. We have recently spent one day a week developing our “wet strokes” in a nice warm swimming pool. Ben and Jake are training to be Level 2 “paddle sport” coaches (half day Jake has been absent even more than usual). The whole activity team have been to Dartmoor and Exmoor for 4 days of (cold) white water to show off all they had learnt at the pool. Tim has discovered the importance of the whistle blowing policy, Hannah is now impervious to ice-cream headaches, Matt and Jake have developed their love of hand cream to tend to their girl like hands, and Will is considering corrective surgery to shorten his legs. It was fun, we enjoyed it, we ALL enjoyed it. - Check out the pictures of Hannah on White Water!

January 2010 - Snow, Snow and more Snow!
Along with the rest of the country, Chidham has had its share of the Snow. Not the best start of the year with half the staff unable to get to the centre due to being stranded in Rowlands Castle or stuck in East Dean not to mention Jon the New Centre Manager unable to make his first day at work having made it half way and have to turn back. But for those who live on site it has been all fun and games.
The staff have been very creative and built many, what you could only call ‘Snow Sculptures’ including a 9 foot wide Igloo.
Last photo: from left to right, Ben, Will, Hannah and Tim enjoying the Igloo after all their hard work. (Click on a photo to view larger)

December 2009 - Rest In Peace Smokey
Smokey the cat has past away (finally). She had been a long term resident at CYE for who knows how long. A well loved cat by many of the children who visited the centre over the past 18 years or so but not so much by the staff who had to live with her and her lack of bladder control. Kevin kindly took her to the vet after she had been showing signs of distress and unfortunately the vet had to put her to sleep due to kidney failure and poor health. She will be remembered for always being willing to aid a comedy sketch or prank of some kind and her general love for life.

24th- 26th November 2009
– B.C.O.C Conference
The staff took three days out from their winter projects, staff training and rehearsals from their Spectacular Christmas Assemblies, for the annual British Christian Outdoor Centres conference, which this year was held at Heatree Activity Centre. The centre is situated in the heart of the Dartmoor National Park which was ideal for the staff to relax with old friends from other Christian Outdoor Centres and share with people from similar lines of work. |
 |
| There was also a chance for staff to have a go and experience some new outdoor activities such as High Ropes, Mountain Biking and Caving. The three days were refreshing and spiritually challenging and a great time for the team to bond especially for the new gap year staff. A great time had by all. |

Jon is a committed enthusiastic Christian and is very excited about playing a leading role in taking the ministry of Christian Youth enterprises into the next stage, with the introduction of the improved facilities through the new ship.
He will start part time in January 2010, and then full time from April. Norman Doney is holding the centre management reins in the meantime

September 2009 - New (and old) Staff
It’s that time of year again when we say our sad goodbyes!
Big thanks to all the summer staff, Pete ‘not buff Pete’ Walker,
Becs ‘the stig’ Johnson, ‘Poochie’ Rachel Christy
and the lovely Sophie Braithwaite.
It’s farewell to ‘Rozzi’ Rosalind Stonham and ‘Samuella’ Sam Beech who have been with us for the past year.
A big hug and ‘manly’ kiss, to the youngest Crossley. Tim has left us after two great years to study Marine Engineering in Falmouth and play in the surf no doubt.
And then finally after 14 (or so) years, it was a very tearful and emotional goodbye to the legend that is, Gavin Jones who moved on to a full time teaching post at Parklands School in Chichester. We wish him all the best.
|
|
But Hooray, it is also an exciting time of welcoming new staff. This year we are joined by an old school camper, Miss Hannah Lithgow from Birdham. A local student at Bishop Luffa, who, after her gap year with us, plans to go on and study Psychology at Surrey University. We are also joined by Master Will Skinner who has already taken on the nick name of ‘John’ due to his un-canny resemblance of his well known, newly wed, eldest brother, John Skinner. Congratulations to John and Emily from all of us at the centre. But back to Will, he is originally from Reading and next year will be heading to Bath University to study Mechanical Engineering. Both Hannah and Will have settled well into life at CYE and are enjoying the start of the winter season |
 |
|
September 2009 - Surf's Up
September also means Surfs Up!!! The surf weekends are, as always a very popular activity which CYE do throughout the year and September brings their start. North Devon is where it’s at, where we stay in a fantastic converted barn house, hosted by the most welcoming and generous ‘surf dude’, Geoff. The Surf weekends truly are a great opportunity to meet people from all walks of life, have a great time learning to surf in one of the most beautiful parts of the U.K and you get to ‘veg out’ on some of Denise’s best home cooked meals. Be warned, you will become totally hooked on surfing and on Denise’s cooking! |

8th August 2009 - Summer Camp Bravo
Summer Camp Bravo (the 12-15 year olds) was another amazing week. With a
great leadership team, the wise and much loved Terry Bateman doing the
talks and a brilliant group of kids, how could we not have a fantastic
time? All the usual CYE activities; some standard (sailing, kayaking,
beach trips) and some not so standard (water balloon catapult fights,
human battleships, crazy "It's a Knockout" challenges) combined to make
a high energy week of fun! Terry challenged and encouraged us all,
speaking from the Sermon on the Mount, Ben Harvey gave some great
morning thoughts, we had a 12/1 prayer tent (variation on 24/7 prayer
rooms) and an undercover BBQ when it rained on Thursday night! Altogether another great Bravo, and we hope to see many of the same kids
back on Autumn Houseparty in October half term. |
 |
|
1st August 2009 - Summer Camp Alpha
Summer Camp Alpha has just finished for another year. As always there was a theme, and this year it was Monopoly! We had a giant Monopoly board (chichester based of course) and the teams first task was to make a cardboard version of their team's playing piece (car, Hat & Doggy!) As always we managed to squeeze in a incredible amount of activities in seven days, as well as sailing, kayaking there was obviously the monopoly based "Water Company" game (everyone got very wet) and the "Electric Company" game (no danger, just plugging things together to make the radio controlled flying saucer lift up that was hiding the Monopoly £100!) Ralph Buckingham (a past CYE staff member who is now works in India) did the talks challenging the campers on who has the Monopoly of their life. As we said all week, with the new ship hopefully just round the corner, this was potentially the penultimate Alpha on the Gerald Daniel!

| June 2009: CYE in Dinghy Sailing Magazine |
 |
We were happy this month to receive our copy of Dinghy Sailing magazine (DSM) which contained our self-written article about the centre, explaining what we do and more importantly why we do it.
We hope the article will reach the right people and bring many more people to the centre. If you have the June issue, look at page 34, it looks like this :

May 2009: Get Active... we are
19 young people came together on a glorious bank holiday weekend for an ACTIVE fun filled weekend. Teams created their own countries including 'Cheeseland' to compete in the CYE pentathlon. Activities included Sailing, kayaking, Archery, assault course, BBQ and picnic by water. Check out the gallery for more pictures.

April 2009: A new deck and a porthole
Norman visited the Barge this week to see progress on the first main phase of work... the new deck! - yes, after a lot of metal has been taken OUT of the barge, its time for some new to be put back in. Once the deck is on, the barge will be weather tight (for the first time in some years) and ready for the next phase of work. The first of the portholes has also been fitted. Click here to visit the 'New Ship Project' page to see more pictures |

March 2009: Assault course updates
You may have read below that the entire assault course has had new wood chips laid down, well there's been a few "obstacle adjustments" too (you'll have to wait and see what they are when you next come to visit) but the most obvious change is the replacement of the canoe store, once an obstacle in itself, its now a much more efficient storage system. You no longer have to go over it, just around it! |
 |
|
| March 2009: Lots of Shoveling... shingle & wood chips ! |
 |
There's LOADS going on at the moment, we've just shifted TWENTY TONS of new shingle down to the end of the jetty replacing what has been washed away, and removed all the old wood chips from the assault course, and put down new! |
 |
|
| March 2009: Sailing News... |
 |
We've just replaced the entire hull on one of the Visions, so its as good as new. The first longboat has been launched after its winter maintenance, and 5 gap year staff have passed their dinghy instructors pre-assesment course. |
 |
|
March 2009: EQUIP Leadership Training
We've just had second weekend of this seasons Equip course, one of the biggest we've run, with 10 candidates. It was a bit chilly at times, but all in all a GREAT weekend. with lots of team building exercises, problem solving and learning about great leaders in the Bible. If you want to know more or maybe come on the next course get it touch with the CYE office, or pick up an Equip leaflet next time you are at the centre. |

March 2009: New ship visit
“It is massive!” - “I can imagine it all now”

March 2009: New Fleet of boats
We are pleased to announce that we have added a fleet of four RS Feva's to our growing range of boats that we use for teaching at the centre. The Feva's are fantastic dinghy's to use when teaching young people spinnaker control and performance sailing.
(and they look really cool to!)

February 2009: Snowy Day
The beginning of February brought a relative blizzard to our tropical shores. The snow which brought the country to a stand still, gave us the perfect opportunity to try out our new Centre clothing. The Musto jackets and polo shirts were bought to replace the current old and very tired looking staff shirts and smocks. We’re very happy with the new kit, and appreciate the ability to replace the old kit. Nick Pyke (one of our 'kogs') may well have regretted agreeing to photograph us (yes, all that snow is heading in his direction!)

|
February 2009: New Canoes
Among our equipment updates this winter is the purchase of 4 brand new canoes which can be used for open canoeing or for running a raft building session. The new canoes are both bigger & better than the older ones which had to go after serving us faithfully for a number of years.
The new boats have four seats in each & with minimal maintenance should last for a good few years.

January 2009: FIRE! (training!)
We have had a Fireman visit us to give us training in Fire prevention and first response. We looked at the causes of fires and the ways they develop in commercial and living areas. The morning was incredibly valuable and showed us how people don't think nearly as clearly during an actual fire, as we were sat in a warm classroom with a cup of tea! We then had practical experience of using different types of fire extinguishers to put out fires fuelled by various things. We’re very grateful to West Sussex Fire Service for providing the training, and for the work they do everyday around the area.

January 2009: Kayak pool Sessions
Part of our winter training for staff includes canoe and kayak safety training. However at this time of year the Bosham channel can be pretty cold, so we have been using St Luke’s indoor swimming pool in Portsmouth for 2 hours on a Friday morning in order to escape the inevitable “ice cream head” feeling from having to capsize a kayak in cold water!

January 20th 2009: River Arun trip
Some staff have been on a Kayaking trip up the River Arun which meets the sea at Littlehampton, where there is the second strongest tide in the UK! We set off a bit late but paddling with the river we made our way down to Amberleigh and through a bridge, for some, this was the first time in fast moving water in a confined space. We stopped further downstream for lunch and despite extending our break the river did not seem to want to change with the tide! So we set off against the current and paddled hard for about an hour, eventually making it safely back to Amberleigh and very sure that we were going to ache the next day!.

December 2008: Christmas Assemblies
This month Matt Winfield has been leading the team of staff through a total of 10 in primary school assemblies, both in the local area & further a field. The theme was advent calendars and the way in which the most important door can sometimes be forgotten. The team performed a sketch dressed as calendar doors and Matt gave a talk about the importance of the 25th door, that had the children laughing (when they were supposed to) and thinking about the true meaning of why we celebrate Christmas.
|
 |
| A few staff also took part in an assembly at Glebelands secondary school in Cranleigh, which was lead with members of the Cranleigh Baptist Church team. We’re thankful to God for allowing us this opportunity and for all those who were praying for the assemblies success. |
|
November 2008: end of season
November saw the official end of season after the last two events: a Powerboat course, and the first weekend of the Equip course. The timetable quickly turned towards staff training in preparation for next season, and to general upkeep and maintenance of the site. Winter projects have been handed out and everyone's started to make sure that everything is up to scratch and even better for next season. The staff also enjoyed a retreat to St Georges House (see pic), for the British Christian Outdoor Centres conference, as we met with old friends and made some new ones, all doing jobs very similar to our own.

October 2008: New staff
Were glad to welcome to the staff team this year 4 new members, from left to right Sam Beech, who joined us at the end of last year after returning from a world challenge expedition to climb Kilimanjaro, and has been with us over the summer months. Jake Elsbury, who has joined us from Chichester high School, one of the local Secondary schools. Ben Ritchie, a graduate of Cambridge University Computer Science Course, And Rozzi "Roxy" Stonham who joins us from Guildford and has previously been on courses run by CYE. |

July 2008: Barge Update
If you read the Blog back in January, you will have seen that the 'GD replacement' team, were looking at a barge in Lowestoft. Well... we are proud to say that after getting plans drawn up, and planning permission approved, we are now the proud owners of 'MOD Barge 1020' (what a catchy name!) this is REALLY fantastic news, so please praise God for this incredible opportunity for the next phase of CYE's life. |
 |
| Later on in this summer, we will be going to tender with various boat yards for the fitting out costs. The Barge project will soon get its own page on this website, for you to keep up to date with progress. Shown here are some photos showing the barge as it was at purchase, and as it was when the team visited it on July 10th, after the superstructure and deck had been cut off. Soon, an adjusted deck and completely different superstructure will be built, before the fit out.

March 2008: The great storm of 2008...?
Having not even been a twinkle in the eye during the great storm of 1987 I missed seeing the Centre covered in water and boats floating over what was normally dry land. But 'luckily' I was given the opportunity today when winds that tipped into force 11 and a tide that measured around 5.90 meters breached the sea wall and began to fill the field with water. In well over a foot of water Tim Moss took the opportunity to swim around the Assault course (see picture) which was constantly being filled by small water falls that cascaded over the sea wall on each wave. |
 |
We moved trailers to save them from rusting & the Dart 16 began to float away from its trolley into the upturned 14. The wind also managed to blow down one of the trees that stood in front of the classroom which was then removed by the KOGs. (Tim Crossley)
Just LOOK at the height of the tide! |
 |
|
February 2008: Safety boat launch
One of the first events of this year is the Powerboat level 2 & Safety Boat course. Having spent a lot of the winter being repainted in the field, it was time for the Bellus (our diesel launch) to be put back on the water. Not and easy task when there has to be high enough water to float it off its trailer whilst keeping the trailers axle and more importantly our new centre car as dry as possible! Certain members of the team dry suited up and the rest just pushed from land, but we managed to get it floating and running smoothly one day before the course started.
|
 |
February 2008: New Kayaks
February saw the arrival of the new fleet of instructor Kayaks. The Dagger GT's were bought with funds raised by Matt Winfield & James Thompson by doing the DW (Devises to Westminster) kayak Marathon. They completed the 125 mile race in just over 24 hours. The new fleet consists of 10 boats for varying size people, and even Matt himself can fit in them! Power was so delighted by their arrival he gave them a big big hug!

 |
January 2008: Look.. its a HUGE Barge!
If you didn't know, the ship is coming to the end of it's useful life, and a team are looking for a replacement. They have just returned from a 2nd viewing of an ex-MOD barge in Lowestoft. Our £60,000 offer has been accepted, and we have also had a good report back from its survey (just like buying a house really!) Now we need support, both prayerful and financial to get the project going. Click here to read the special report.

December 2007: School Assemblies
Well, for all those of you who think that we do nothing at the centre in the winter, here's a picture to prove otherwise. (just because you're not here, we don't just sit around looking at the boats!) On top of all the maintenance that goes on, in the weeks leading up to Christmas we do a lot of Christmas School Assemblies, getting the Christmas story across to many children, in a thought provoking and memorable way.
|
 |
November 2007: Christian Outdoor Centres
13th-15th of November saw 10 staff members heading to Carroty Wood in Tunbridge, Kent for 3 days of fun and fellowship with other Christian outdoor centre staff (they call this a conference!) Time was spent doing activities, in worship and teaching, small groups and lots of time to catch up with old friends and making new ones (they call this networking!) All had a good time, and many welcomed the opportunity to take a break from day to day work at the end of what has been a busy season for the staff.

 |
November 2007: CYE DVD !
We now have newly edited short DVD of CYE activities. It is an interim production editing some past footage with a sound track and contact information. We plan to use it to help youth groups book the centre or promote their weekends. It can also be used for promotion at churches. Have a look in the video section and show your friends. We have commissioned LBC Productions to make a new DVD during next summer, so if you are here you could be a star!

November 2007: EQUIP Leadership Training Weekend Report- by Chris Gath
Previous CYE experiences were, to be frank, nothing to this weekend. Past times have been good, learning sailing, seeing friends and with God along the way too. This weekend was completely different. There were a lot of tasks (all fun if not challenging) but the main aspect was on glorifying God through leading, in any form. This weekend is a must for all those thinking of any form of leadership, be it at church, at work or in youth group. Good fun, good food and a good fount of knowledge which I have no doubts will help us all in our path with God. (Chris Gath) |
 |
November 2007: Helping out the neighbours
CYE staff spent the day at Cobnor House (the one just past the centre, towards the headland) and joining some other locals with the Cobnor Estate manager Mike Bulpit, they did some tidying up... cutting down lots of brambles, trees and wotnot. (yes they thought giving them very large, sharp cutting tools was a good idea!) |
 |
October 2007: New Web Site That's right we've got a brand new shiny website. But if you're on this page, reading this, you can already see that! Well, we think it looks quite nice, so thought we'd draw your attention to it. Can you see the picture? Its a website, in a website, in a website.... If you can think of anything you'd like to see on the new site, please let us know. Otherwise enjoy looking around (and make sure you look at the amusing pictures in the gallery!) |
 |
October 2007: The GREAT STORM of 1987
On the 16th of this month it's the 20th anniversary of the Great storm of 1987!! At CYE we had boats everywhere, and were canoeing around the assault course in the field! The safety boat came off its mooring and ended up at Bosham, having rolled a few times. The Gerald Daniel was fine although a bit out of position!! This is what it looked like -->

 |
September 2007: New Staff
Well it's that time of year, when we say goodbye to some of the team as they go on to other things (this year, to Varied places: Charles to
Southampton Uni, Rachel to Uni of East Anglia,
Jeremy to a job in Havant, Nathan to the Royal Marine Music Corps. and Anupa back to India!) BUT... that means some NEW people! (pictured here: Will, Sophie, Jo and Tim) read their first impressions in the current Masthead |
 |
September 2007: ANOTHER CYE wedding
LOADS of congratulations to current staff member Chris Adams, and to previous staff member Lou Thompson on the occasion of their wedding. A HUGE crowd of current and past CYE staff, volunteers, family and friends were at the fantastic day on the 1st September. We counted over 50 CYE-related people there! We wish them all the best in their new life together. |
 |
August 2007: There's no smoke with out fire
You may have heard that on the 16th August there was a fire at the cottage, in the lane on the way to CYE, where several of our staff live. Thankfully no one was home at the time, and no one was injured, although a lot of damage was done and a lot of possessions lost.
For a full "official report" of the event, click here |
 |
July 2007: Claim to fame
Chris McLeish did an Advanced Instructor Course at Thorney Island in
July (at the same time there was a photographer there) Chris managed
many cool poses in front of the camera, and after scouring the dinghy
sailing publications for months, was thrilled to find himself the star
of a double page spread in Dinghy Sailing Magazine (Nov 2007) - no less
than four photos!! Check him out if you can. |
 |
March 2007: Camp Leaders Get Together
All the camp leaders (that's leaders of all the CYE camps, NOT leaders who are a bit camp) got together in March and had a great evening discussing CYE's vision for the camps, and
encouraged each other with news and stories from some of the different
camps that CYE runs. (Young Ents, Bravo, Alpha, Autumn, Families) It was also a really
fun re-union, as generally they don't meet up with leaders working on
different camps to them. |
January 2007: Snow!
Not that many of you will probably have seen the sailing centre in the snow, so here's a picture of the staff team with a kayaking Snowman. It was especially a treat for staff member Anupa, who, coming from India, has never seen snow before! |
 |
December 2006: The passing of a friend
If you who have visited the centre will know we have two cats. Sadly, Snowman (the black one) passed away peacefully on the 1st December 2006. The burial service was conducted by our resident undertaker (D. Garner) in the centre grounds. At least the local wildlife will be safer now she is not prowling around the centre. Her speciality was to capture and return with a variety of animal life (some bigger than her!) and deposit the remains in the building for us all to find. One of our supporters was so moved by the event that he produced the accompanying picture as a lasting memorial to a dear departed friend. |
 |
November 2006: Bursary Fund
Hev Cheesman will be well-known to many of you (especially anyone who's ben on Summer Camp Alpha) This year she is President of the SE Society of Chartered Accountants and, as such, could nominate a charity to benefit from the President’s Dinner. She very kindly nominated the CYE Bursary Fund and at the dinner, in September, donations were received totaling £1162.17. Hev came down to the centre in November and handed over the cheque to Gavin Jones the Centre Manager |
